Turn Awareness into Action - May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Mental Health America’s theme for 2025 is “Turn Awareness into Action.” This theme encourages individuals to move beyond recognizing the importance of mental health and take meaningful steps towards positive change.

A single factor does not cause mental health problems, but rather a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors. These factors can interact in different ways for different individuals, influencing their susceptibility to mental health challenges.

BIOLOGICAL FACTORS

  • Genetics: A family history of mental illness can increase an individual's risk.

  • Brain Chemistry: Imbalances in neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, can affect mood and behavior.

  • Physical Health: Certain medical conditions, like chronic pain or thyroid problems, can impact mental health.

  • Substance Use: Drug and alcohol abuse can trigger or worsen mental health problems.

  • Traumatic Brain Injury: A head injury can lead to changes in mood, behavior, and cognitive function.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS

  • Childhood Experiences: Adverse childhood experiences, such as abuse, neglect, or trauma, can increase the risk of later mental health problems.

  • Trauma: Experiences like violence, accidents, or loss can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health difficulties.

  • Stress: Long-term or severe stress can contribute to anxiety and depression.

  • Personality Traits: Certain personality traits, like perfectionism or low self-esteem, can increase vulnerability to mental health problems.

  • Coping Mechanisms: Poor coping skills can make it harder to deal with life's challenges and increase the risk of developing mental health problems.

SOCIAL FACTORS

  • Social Isolation: Lack of social support and feelings of loneliness can worsen mental health.

  • Discrimination and Stigma: Experiences of discrimination and stigma can negatively impact mental health.

  • Poverty and Unemployment: Social and economic hardship can contribute to stress, anxiety, and depression.

  • Relationships: Difficult or unhealthy relationships can negatively impact mental health.

  • Life Events: Significant life changes, such as bereavement or job loss, can trigger mental health problems.
