Q&A with Mrs. Hughes about the 2025 SCTS Internship

Updated: Apr 30

Mrs. Hughes, as the founder and visionary of SCTS, what makes this internship unique?

Some solo practitioners do not have the volume of work to share with interns. At SCTS, interns will not only work with in-house clients but also engage with the community and collaborate with other agents of change.

What majors should apply? What value will these students receive from this internship?

All social workers, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and PMHNP (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners) students are welcome to apply. SCTS Interns' involvement would align with our mission to assist individuals in their recovery from anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, substance abuse, and other behavioral health issues, while integrating emotional intelligence and mindfulness practices for a well-rounded healing process. They will also learn how their profession can impact the local community.

At the end of this internship, what would be the key takeaways for interns?

Interns will take away the importance of reciprocity in the therapeutic relationship. Taking the time to work with clients in a safe and supportive environment can lead to growth and exploration for the client, as well as increased empathy, understanding, and insight for the intern.

When does this internship start?

Interns should contact the SCTS office prior to the start of their internship term. Information will be provided to those who complete the internship form and have a placement interview.

Why is it important to you to provide this leadership/mentoring opportunity for tomorrow's LCSWs?

It’s essential to offer mentoring to the next generation of change agents. Interns should understand where they’re a good fit, so that a client’s therapeutic experience is not just basic, but amazing. The SCTC internship offers an opportunity for students to determine whether they prefer to work at a micro, mezzo, or macro level.

How is the field changing, and how does this internship prepare students for real-life experiences in the field?

The field has undergone significant changes over the decades. Despite its origins, the profession has evolved to a point where we serve as mediators between individuals and the world's expectations.

Interns at Social Concepts Therapeutic Services would bring energy, new ideas, and a dedication to enhancing the therapeutic journey for youth, individuals, couples, and families. Working alongside experienced clinicians, they would support the use of therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Family Systems Therapy to foster personal growth and help clients achieve self-awareness. Their involvement would align with Mrs. Annette Hughes’ mission to assist individuals in their recovery from anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, and other behavioral health issues, while integrating mindfulness practices for a well-rounded healing process.
